A credit is a tile. That's the whole model.
Every successful request to the tile endpoint — GET /v1/tiles/{z}/{x}/{y}.pbf — deducts exactly one credit from your balance, regardless of zoom level, region, or map style. No hidden weighting.
Flat rate at every zoom level, z0 through z18+.
Subscription credits add to your balance on renewal — unused credits aren't clawed back.
One-off packs, available on any plan including Free. Never expire on renewal.
401 / 402 / 429 responses from the gateway never consume a credit.

Pricing FAQ
Do I need a credit card for the Free tier?+
No. The Free tier gives you 5,000 credits a month with no card on file. You'll only be asked for payment details when you choose a paid plan or buy a top-up pack.
What happens if I run out of credits?+
The tile endpoint returns a 402 insufficient_credits response until you either top up or your next renewal adds your plan's monthly grant. It never silently charges you more.
Do unused credits roll over?+
Yes. Each renewal adds your plan's credit grant to your existing balance rather than resetting it to a flat cap, and top-up credits never expire on renewal.
Can I change plans later?+
Yes, upgrade or downgrade anytime from the dashboard billing page. Changes are handled through your Paddle subscription and take effect immediately.
Is pricing the same at every zoom level?+
Yes — that's the point. 1 credit = 1 tile request, whether it's a wide z2 overview tile or a detailed z16 street tile.
